READING GOALS

Reading Strategies

Reading strategies are tools that good readers use to enhance their reading comprehension. Students will learn to apply the following strategies while reading.

-Make Predictions

Students will learn to preview text and predict what the story they are about to read may be about. They will also learn to use clues throughout the text to predict what may happen next in a story.

-Infer

Authors do not come right out and say everything about a character or an event in a story. Students will learn to use the author's clues to figure out a character's motives or feelings in a story.

-Summarize

Students will learn to stop and summarize when reading as a way to monitor their comprehension.

-Monitor and Clarify

Often children will read a whole book and then struggle to retell main events. This year, students will learn to monitor their own reading, so that when they come to a word or concept they do not understand, they stop and clarify it, instead of blindly moving on.

-Question

Students will learn to stop and pose questions while they are reading. They will learn to ask factual questions, as well as "I wonder..." questions that lead to a deeper understanding of text.

-Make Connections

Students will become aware of all the connections that can be made while reading. They will learn to connect the information that they read to their prior knowledge and experiences.

Reading Skills

Reading skills are taught to help make reading meaningful. Our goal is for first graders to aquire these skills by the end of the year.

-Sequencing

Students will be able to order the main events of a story.

-Compare and Contrast

Students will be able to compare and contrast the events and characters of two different stories as well as the differences between characters in the same story.

-Cause and Effect

Students will be able to recognize the relationship between cause and effect events in a story.

-Main Idea and Details

Students will be able to state the main idea of a story and point out details that support the main idea.

-Fantasy and Realism

Students will be able to categorize stories and events in stories as either fantasy or realistic.
