                            Reading

 This wonderful program will help your child become a successful reader, writer and speller. The program includes reading, writing, spelling, english (grammer) and phonics. 

Reading Strategies are tools that good readers use to enhance their reading comprehension. Students will learn to apply the following strategies while reading:

     Monitor/Clarify
     Predict/Infer
     Phonics/Decoding

     Evaluate
Reading Comprehension Skills are taught to help make            reading meaningful. By the end of the school year, 2nd Grade will know how to:

Phonics: Students will be able to identify:    

short vowels
     long vowels
     the two sounds for g
     consonant clusters
     the two sounds for c

long i (igh, ie)

words with -ed, -ing endings that drop final e

Students will be able to read and write:

words with consonant digraphs (th, wh, sh, ch, tch)

words with endings (-er, -s, -es, -ies, -est, -le, -ed, -ing)
     words with vowel pairs (ai, ay, ow, ou, ee, ea, oa, oo, ew, ue)
     words with nd, nt mp, ng, nk
     prefix words (-un)
     silent consonants (gh, k(n), b)
Grammar: Students will study:
     identifying sentences
     naming parts of sentences

     special nouns
     one/more than one
     nouns that change spelling in plural
     words for nouns
     singular possessive nouns
     plural possessive nouns
     verbs

Writing: Students will learn how to write a(n):

                                      Math

In second grade we use the Progress in Mathmatics program for teaching math. The chapers we will be doing are; 

    ch. 1 addition and subtraction facts

    ch. 2 place value to 100

   ch. 3 data and graphs: using operations

    ch. 4 addition: two-digit numbers

   ch. 5 subtraction: two-digit numbers

   ch. 6 geometry

    ch. 7 money and time

   ch. 8 place value to 1000

   ch. 9 addition and subtraction: three-digit numbers

    ch. 10 fractions and probability

    ch. 11 measurement

    ch. 12 multiplication and division

There will be a test at the end of each chapter. There will be small quizzes given throughout the chapter. There will also be timed addition and subtraction facts tests each week. 

 

                            Religion

  This is a very important year for religion. The second graders will be making their First Reconciliation and First Communion! Important dates:

             Wednesday, November 9th- Sacrament Meeting 6:30pm

              Wednesday, December 14th- First Reconciliation 6:30pm

              Wednesday, April 25th- First Communion Practice 6:30pm

                Saturday, April 28th- First Communion 1:00pm

 There are five units in religion and each has four chapers. There will be a test after each chapter. 

                 Unit 1- We Gather As Believers

                Unit 2- We Ask God's Forgiveness

                Unit 3- We Celebrate the Word of God

                 Unit 4- We Celebrate the Gift of         Eucharist

                  Unit 5- We Go in Peace

We will also study Advent, Christmas, Lent, Holy Week, Easter, other Holy Days, Mary, a few Saints and Holy People and Our Catholic Heritage. 

     We will be planning three masses this year. The dates for those masses are;

November 9th, January 25th, May 16th

 

                            Handwriting

Text: Zaner Bloser Perfecting Manuscript. We will start cursive a little before Christmas break.

 

                         Social Studies

 This subject will be taught by Ms. Osmack. The second graders do not get a grade for social studies on the report card, it will just say T for taught. The students will go to Ms. Osmack once a week for 30 min. 

 

                            Science

Just like social studies, the students do not get a grade for science, they will recieve a T for taught. I will be teaching science to both second grades. They will each have science once a week for 30 min. We will be studying:

12) Human body and five senses

The students will develop an interest in exploration and observation, develop an awareness of the world around them and being experimentation. 

 We will be doing the MySci program in December, January and February.
