Ms. Burkard - Math Math “May your life be like arithmetic: Joys added, Sorrow subtracted, Friends multiplied, Love un-divided.” -Unknown My hope is math can become a useful tool for all of my students. I hope that I can show math as a way of problem solving to be used at different times each day. I hope each student may accomplish just a tad more success than the last time they had math. I have always enjoyed math and hope that I can share my love of this subject with my students. My main expectation in math is that each student will try, no matter what level of success they are experiencing, and that only pencil is used in class. Sixth grade focuses on deepening an understanding of numbers, especially decimals and fractions. We will further our understanding of adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing both decimals and fractions. We will move into percents, statistics and graphs as the year moves on. We will finish with solidifying our geometry and measurement skills, especially in comparing perimeter and area and ending with surface area. If time permits we will begin integers. Seventh grade deepens their study of numbers looking at rational and irrational numbers. We focus a good deal of time on integers as they become a regular part of our equations, even into positive and negative fractions. We begin functions and linear equations and talk a little about exponents. We heavily look at ratios and proportions and dive into probability. Finally we end the year with geometry: angles, circles, and volume to be exact! Not letting the name scare us, eighth grade gets ready for high school studying pre-algebra. We deepen the study of real numbers, exponents, and multi-step equations. We become experts with graphs and linear equations. We study more deeply two and three-dimensional figures in geometry and do a little more with statistics and probability. Below are four websites your child can use for extra practice. The first three are free math worksheets. The last website has some links to other websites and games. It says the last website is for 6th grade, but there are beneficial things for the 7th and 8th grade too! http://www.freemathworksheets.net/ http://themathworksheetsite.com/ http://www.nebo.edu/sagecreek/pages/math_links_6.htm Do you ever get frustrated doing your homework because you forgot exactly how to do something? Have no fear I have some websites below that give good explanations to different math concepts. Sometimes you have to search within the site a little. I will continue adding sites as I find more. Let me know if you have a site that helped you for me to add! |
