Mrs. Steidley - Curriculum WELCOME TO THE FIRST GRADE CURRICULUM PAGE!
Read all about our goals for this year! READING GOALS Reading Strategies Reading strategies are tools that good readers use to enhance their reading comprehension. Students will learn to apply the following strategies while reading. Students will be able to: -Make Predictions Students will learn to preview text and predict what the story they are about to read may be about. They will also learn to use clues throughout the text to predict what may happen next in a story. -Infer Authors do not come right out and say everything about a character or an event in a story. Students will learn to use the author's clues to figure out a character's motives or feelings in a story. -Summarize Students will learn to stop and summarize while reading as a way to monitor their comprehension. -Monitor and Clarify Often children will read a whole book and then struggle to retell main events. This year, students will learn to monitor their own reading, so that when they come to a word or concept they do not understand, they stop and clarify it, instead of blindly moving on. -Question Students will learn to stop and pose questions while they are reading. They will learn to ask factual questions, as well as "I wonder..." questions that lead to a deeper understanding of text. -Make Connections Students will become aware of all the connections that can be made while reading. They will learn to connect the information that they read to their prior knowledge and experiences. Reading Skills
