Please join us! Reading Students will find the cause-and-effect relationships in story details. Phonics Long i will be our focus. Grammar/Writing Students will begin the steps to composing a personal narrative. Math We will continue our study of place value. Science The MySci Van is here this week. Students will receive 3 lessons on the MySci Van. Social Studies We will finish learning about Martin Luther King Jr. January 9 - January 13 Thank you to everyone who came in last Friday! Reading We'll be reading a nonfiction story about maps this week. Students will practice noting new information as they read this nonficiton story. The goal is for students to begin to develop strategies that allow them to learn from their reading. Phonics We're learning to read and spell words that have the a-consonant-silent e pattern. Math Don't forget about the Chapter 4 math test. It will be given on Tuesday! Students will begin Chapter 5, Place Value to 100 on Wednesday. Social Studies We'll begin learning about Martin Luther King Jr. Science Our MySci lessons will continue. January 3 - January 6 Welcome Back Everyone! I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas Break! Read below to see what we will be working on this week. Spelling: she, fish, much, chin, shell, chop Word Wall Words: grow, light, long, more, other, right, room, small, these Religion: The Feast of the Epiphany is Friday, January 6. We'll be studying the story of the Three Kings this week! Reading: Students will use a Venn diagram to compare and contrast characters and events in text. Phonics: We'll be practicing reading and writing words with consonant digraphs this week. The consonant digraphs we are working on are: sh, th, ch, wh, tch Grammar: We'll practice writing complete sentences. Math: This week students will be introduced to three new ways to describe data: range, mode, and median. The range of a set of numbers is the difference between the greatest and the least numbers in a set. The mode of a set of numbers is the number that appears most frequently. The median of a set of numbers is the middle number after the numbers are arranged in order. Social Studies: We will continue our study of maps. Science: Students will begin the MySci unit this week. MySci is a program that offers science kits and lesson plans to St. Louis area schools. The kits and lessons allow students to learn science through inquiry and discovery. First Graders will be studying soil, rocks, and caves. We can't wait to get started! December 19 - 22 We have a very busy week ahead of us! Religion Students will read the story of the first Christmas. We will complete our Jesse Trees. Please look for them to come home in your child's take home folder. Reading We will practice sequencing the events in a story. Writing We have written wonderful narratives about Christmas. This week, we will edit them for periods and correct capitalization. Science We will study amphibians this week. December 5 – December 8 Don't forget about the Christmas Program on Thursday! Word Wall Words: friend, girl, know, play, read, she, sing, today, write Spelling Words: swing, spot, snap, step, slip, stuck Religion: The first graders will be keeping a Jesse Tree during this Advent season. A Jesse Tree is Jesus' family tree. Throughout Advent students will be reading about some of those who came before Jesus. An ornament symbolizing each bible story will be added to the Jesse tree as we read. You can view our Jesse Tree on the bulletin board outside of the first grade classrooms. Phonics Focus: We'll study s blends and the silent letters kn, wr, gn. We'll also review the short e sound. Reading: Students will practice comparing and contrasting characters and events in a story. Writing: Students will use the writing process to compose a formal narrative. Math: We will have our Chapter 3 test on Wednesday! Use the chapter review that was sent home last week to practice! Social Studies: Last week we discussed the differences between globes and maps. This week we'll look at the different purposes of maps. Science: Our study of animal classification continues. __________________________ Welcome back! We'll practice writing complete sentences. Math: We'll be finishing up our subtraction chapter this week. The test will be next week Wednesday, December 7. The chapter review will be sent home on Wednesday, November 30. Please use the review to prepare for the test. Religion: Students will learn about Advent this week. Science: Students will be learning about fish and mammals this week. Social Studies: Students will learn about the difference between maps and globes. November 21 – November 23 We will have no spelling words or word wall words due to the short week. I hope everyone has a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday! Reading We will be meeting in small groups this week to practice reading fluency. Phonics Students will review contractions with 's. Math We will continue to study the relationship between addition and subtraction. Grammar Students will identify the action part of a sentence. Religion God loved us so much that he created the world for us! Science Students are looking at the difference between mammals and fish. Social Studies We will continue to study the story of the First Thanksgiving. November 14 - November 18 blue, brown, color, green, many, some, also, funny, like Religion God is our loving Father. He created us and all of the things in our world out of love. Reading Good readers ask questions before and during reading. Asking questions helps a reader read for meaning. Grammar Students will work on identifying the naming and action part of a sentence. Phonics We'll be studying r clusters and contractions with 's. Science Students are working on classifying animals. Social Studies We'll be learning about the first Thanksgiving. October 31 - November 4 WORD WALL WORDS: look, bird, animal, see, full, flower, cold, of, fall SPELLING WORDS: tall, call, hall, pass, Mass, grass READING: Students will be reading nonfiction stories this week. They will practice picking out the main idea and details in a selection. PHONICS: We will be reviewing the short a sound this week. Students will also be learning to read and spell words with double consonants. MATH: We will begin chapter 3 on Monday. Chapter 3 deals with strategies that help us subtract. RELIGION: What is praise? Students will learn words of praise and discover that praising God is a powerful form of prayer. SOCIAL STUDIES: Students will continue Junior Achievement this week. Junior Achievemnt is a program aimed at educating children in economics. First graders will focus on the role of families in the local economy. SCIENCE October 24 – October 28 Thank you for coming to Parent-Teacher conferences. I enjoyed talking to all of you! We are very busy this week! Math We'll practice various addition strategies this week. Students will learn to use a number line, as well as patterns and doubles facts to solve unknown addition problems. Social Studies We will explore the difference between an urban, rural, and suburban community. Religion Students will take a tour of the church to locate the tabernacle, crucifix, and baptismal font.
September 26 – September 30 Week Six Hi everyone! We made it through testing week! Our first graders did a tremendous job. I am very proud of all of them. Read on to see what's happening this week. SPELLING WORDS pot, hot, dot, hop, mop, top WORD WALL WORDS Please review these words from last week: a, to, have, one, who, find These are our new words: upon, in, what, once, two, three, four, five READING Students are practicing asking questions before, during, and after they read. When a reader asks questions, her comprehension increases as she searches for the answer. GRAMMAR Students will practice adding punctuation marks at the end of sentences. PHONICS RELIGION We will begin to study our church building and the important things that our church building holds. MATH Students will begin addition this week! SOCIAL STUDIES We will learn about Johnny Appleseed this week. SCIENCE Where does an apple come from? As we study the legend of Johnny Appleseed, we'll explore the life of an apple tree. September 19 – September 23 Week 5 We will be taking the Iowa Standardized Test this week! Please make sure your child gets plenty of rest and eats a big breakfast. Due to testing, there will be no homework assignments or spelling words. September 12 - 16
Week Four Wow! I can't believe it's already been four weeks. Check out what we're up to this week! WORD WALL We have 8 word wall words so far. We will review them this week. They are: we, jump, here, and, too, not, go, on, the SPELLING fin, hit, it, in, win, sit READING We'll apply what we learned last week about comparing and contrasting to this week's story, Pam Goes to School. PHONICS Short a and the consonants c, f, m, n, p, s, and t will be reviewed. Short i will be introduced. GRAMMAR Capitalization rules are our focus. MATH What is an ordinal number? It's a number that tells order! First, second and third are all examples of ordinal numbers. Students will learn about ordinal numbers as well as story problems.
RELIGION Last week we learned that we are a community of people that follow Jesus. We call ourselves Catholics. This week we'll talk about what Catholics do. Catholics help, care, listen and pray. SOCIAL STUDIES SCIENCE September 6 - 9 WEEK THREE I hope everyone had a great Labor Day Weekend! We have a short, but busy week ahead! WORD WALL WORDS: we, jump, here, and, too, not SPELLING WORDS: fan, can, man, tap, nap, lap READING We'll be comparing and contrasting this week. Students will learn to note differences and similarities between characters in a story. PHONICS Students will be making and reading words with the short a sound. We'll also review the consonants n, f, and p. RELIGION We are a part of the Catholic Church. Catholics are a community of people that follow Jesus. MATH Students will learn how to use a number line. They will learn the terms counting on and counting back. SOCIAL STUDIES Our study of communities continues. Students will take a look at the jobs of different community helpers. SCIENCE What is weather? Students will begin to think about all that weather encompasses. *****************************************

Students will learn how to use illustrations and an author's clues to make predictions while reading. Phonics Students will practice blending words with the short a sound! Grammar We'll focus on capitalizing letters at the beginning of a sentence. Religion We are part of a Church Community! Students will learn that Jesus is the Good Shepherd. He calls us to follow him. Math Students will learn the following vocabulary: one more, one fewer, before, after, between, counting on, and counting back. Social Studies What is a community? Week 1 August 22 - August 26 The fist weeks of school are always so busy. This is the time that the foundation for a successful year is set. My goals for this week are listed below. -Students will get to know me, eachother and their classroom environment. -Students will begin to feel safe, comfortable and excited about their place in the classroom. -Students will be introduced to classroom procedures, rules and routines.
