STAR Reading
The STAR Reading Assessment is a tool used to determine a student's reading level and ZPD (zone of proximal development). It is typically given 3 times a year and features adaptive branching. This means that when a student answers questions correctly, questions become progressively more difficult. Conversely, if a student answers incorrectly, the difficulty level decreases. Our students in Grades 1-5 used the STAR Reading Assessment for the first time this year August 25-27. Teachers received reports on reading level and zone of proximal development (ZPD). The ZPD is the range of book levels that a student should read within to realize maximum growth as a reader. An example of a ZPD might be 1.5--2.5 , and students will check out books from the Library in their designated ZPD. Students will use the STAR Reading Assessment tool at least one more time, in January, and may take it again at the end of the year.
