4.  Pretend you have a pet orangutan.  Write down its

name and a list of its five favorite foods.

5.  How many sides does an octagon have?  List two

things that are in the shape of an octagon.

6.  Make an omelet.  Write down the ingredients that

you used.

7.  Play "Big O." Pronounce a series of words. If the word

begins with the short o sound, ask your child to form a

large O by raising his/her hands above his/her head with

fingertips touching. Hands remain down if the word begins

with another sound. Say the following words:

October, olive, on, cat, octopus, policeman, operator,

butter, oxen, give, otter, operation, add, barn, opposite,

cardinal, ostrich, oxygen, & odd.

8. Make a list of opposites.  Include at least three

pairs.  Please sound out the words yourself.

1.       Practice using sign language to spell:  all, four, not, are, & down.

2.     Listen closely for 5 minutes, and then list all the sounds you

hear in your house.

pieces in your package.  Print that numeral.  Eat three pieces. Print

the numeral that tells us how many are left now.

4.      Find all the letters of the alphabet in a magazine or newspaper. 

Glue them to a piece of paper. 

5.     Make a ladybug or lion out of colored paper.

6.    Draw a picture and/or write a sentence about your favorite

book you read this week.  Was it fiction or nonfiction?  Please

include the title of the book.

7. Take a "left-right" walk. Walk from one end of your house to the

other.  Go into every room.  Each time your turn right, say, "RIGHT!"

Every time your turn left, say, "LEFT!" Ask Mom or Dad to go with you

and show them you know your left from your right.

*Bonus Tornado Sight Word Game

1.     Tie your tennis shoes ten times.

2.     Find a picture of a tiger in a magazine.  Tape it on a piece of

3.     Make tootsie rolls! (recipe below)  **This has been a favorite!

4.     Tear out ten T's from a magazine and tape them to a piece of paper.

5.     Print twenty 2's neatly on a piece of paper.

6.    Teach or tell the class a tongue twister.

7.    Trace your name with ten different colors on a piece of paper.

Tootsie Rolls

2 tablespoons soft butter

1/2 cup light Karo syrup

2 squares unsweetened chocolate - melted

1 teaspoon vanilla

3 cups powdered sugar - sifted

3/4 cup powdered milk (you could also just add an additional 3/4

cup powdered sugar and not use the powdered milk; they taste

even sweeter)

Put all the ingredients into a double plastic bag and close tightly!

Squeeze until well mixed. 

Roll into balls.

Place on waxed paper and chill in refrigerator.

2.     Practice writing the lower-case alphabet.  Use the a-z chart as

a guide.  Have a parent stand behind you while you are sitting at a

table with a paper and pencil.  (If you have an easel, stand at that.) 

Your parent should draw a letter on your back with a finger.  Parents,

please start at the top of your child's back, draw firmly and clearly,

using his/her entire back.  Practice a few times to get the feel of it.

  Now, you write on your paper at the same time your parent is

drawing on your back.  Continue with all the letters of the alphabet.

food restaurant.  It could be a bag with the

restaurant name or a food container with the

restaurant name.  (We are looking for more

environmental print items that students know and
