RELIGION Blest Are We consists of five units of study. Each unit covers and important area of Catholic belief and practice. Unit 1 The Sacraments: God's Gifts of Life Unit 2 Baptism and Confirmation Unit 4 Reconcilliation and Anointing of the Sick Unit 5 Holy Orders and Matrimony Other areas of study include the Bible, Saints, the Liturgical year, and the Rosary.
ENGLISH - Mrs. Van Pelt HBJ Language provides an organized study of the writing process in each unit while interweaving the study of grammar, usage, and mechanics. The grammar, usage, and mechanics will include: -sentence structures -nouns -verbs -pronouns -adjectives -adverbs -prepositions, conjunctions, interjections -diagraming
WORDLY WISE Wordly Wise 3000 is a vocabulary development series that introduces new words and their meanings. Words are presented in a list with their meanings, and in a variety of exercises including questions, stories, fill in the blanks, and puzzles. Lessons will take place over a two-week period. -Monday: Review of word list words will be written on notecards for study -Wednesday: Parts A and B due -Friday: Parts C and D due -2nd Monday: Part E due -Wednesday: Spelling test -Friday: Vocabulary test
MATH Progress in Mathmatics continues to build and reinforce the skills that have been introduced in previous years. Areas of study include: -place value, addition, and subtraction -multiplication -division -number theory -fractions -word problems -problem-solving skills
Science Our concentration will be on Scott Foresman's unit study of Life Science. These lessons include: -Comparing living things -Reproduction and change -Adaptations -Ecology
SOCIAL STUDIES The focus of Macmillan/McGraw-Hill's book is the study of the United States and its history. The historical eras that we will focus on are: -Colonization -Revolutionary War -The Constitution -Expansion West -The Industrial Revolution -The Civil War -The Twentieth Century
Reading - Mrs. Cahill The Houghton Mifflin anthology is used along with a Student Resource Book for vocabulary, supporting skills, critical reading skills, and comprehension assessment. The heart of this program is literature and each unit focuses on a different theme. These themes include: -adventure -non-fiction -characterization -traditional tales -author focus -space exploration
Students are expected to read one book per month from many different genres. A book report will be presented in any form they wish. Examples would include a poster, diarama, or even a dramatization is two or more have read the same book.
All assigned work, including tests, are graded the same. In other words, a test is equal to everyday work. Each child is responsible for his/her own work. Therefore, there is no extra credit.
