Learning Objectives

in the Library

This year grades Kindergarten through 5th Grade will be having Library classes.

Kindergarten

1. Understand the basic concepts of book care.

2. Differentiate between the terms author and

illustrator, and identify simple parts of a book.

3. Have fun with books by using the Missouri Show-Me

Reader award nominees.

1st Grade

1. Remember and use library terms and concepts from

previous year, and incorporate additional terms.

2. Develop a love of reading and learn about different

authors and illustrators.

3. Develop responsibility in checking out and returning

books.

2nd Grade

1. Reinforce knowledge of library and book terms and

incorporate new terms.

2. Appreciate different illustrators' styles and continue to

develop a love of reading.

3. Begin using the dictionary to look up selected words.

3rd Grade

1. Differentiate between fiction and nonfiction books, and

be able to locate them in the library.

2. Learn and use the Dewey Decimal System.

3. Reinforce dictionary skills.

4. Continue to develop a love of reading.

4th Grade

1. Reinforce use of the Dewey Decimal System.

2. Introduce the card catalog and develop skill in reading a

catalog card and using the card catalog on computer.

3. Introduce the almanac and encyclopedia and begin building

research skills.

4. Reinforce map skills.

5th Grade

1. Review and reinforce knowledge of the Dewey Decimal

System and card catalog.

2. Continue to introduce new authors and books.

3. Continue to refine research skills using the almanac,

encyclopedia, and the internet.

4. Support the teacher's classroom curriculum.
