First Grade Art Curriculum Upon the completion of the First Grade Art Program, the student will:  I.                    Perceive and understand:  A.    recognize and describe the use of line in historical artworks  B.    appreciate rhythm in a work of art such as Van Goghs’s Starry Night  C.    understand that form and function go together  D.    know that artists have designed clothing, buildings, and furniture  E.    see the difference between two-dimensional and three-dimensional art work  F.     discuss subject matter in art; understand differences in still-life, portrait, landscape, seasons  G.    understand careers: police officer, doctor, minister/priest, fire fighter, barber  H.    understand how to show space (with reminders): overlapping, figures smaller in background                                                                             II.                  Appreciate and be aware of:  A.    difficulty with more than one idea at a time  B.    can work with others in a group  C.    can draw a complete figure  D.    love lessons that are full of activity

III.                Possess a knowledge of:  A.    use drawing media effectively and not scribbling  B.    mix primary colors to make secondary colors; can make colors lighter or darker; finger-paint; watercolor; understand and use crayon resist  C.    fold, fringe, pleat, tear, cut and glue paper  D.    make pinch and coil pots and apply glazes; simple slab construction  E.    weave paper in a simple pattern  F.     about their own work and that of others use safe practices with art supplies and put in proper places

IV.               Create  A.    artwork from all medias

V.                 Produce artwork and demonstrate ability of:  A.    drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking, and ceramics  B.    discussion  C.    introduce vocabulary Elements of Design  D.    identify line and shape within classroom or clothing

VI.               Develop evaluation process by:  A.    turning in art projects

B.    discussing art in reference to Elements of Art

C.  verbalizing
