The Fourth-Grade Art Curriculum

 I.                    Perceive and understand:  A.    color schemes based on color wheel  B.    a more realistically proportioned human figure  C.    how artists depict animals and the human figure  D.    different media, subject matter, and art forms  E.    form follows function in design  F.     many artists express themselves and their cultural identities  G.    architecture from various climates and cultures of the world

II.                  Appreciate and be aware of:  A.    developed sense of humor; love of comics and cartoon characters  B.    can feel inferiority about their lack of ability to draw what they see  C.    compare work to peers  D.    open to viewing different art styles and do not yet judge “good” or “bad”

III.                Possess a knowledge of:  A.    basic drawing skills with emphasis on the human figure  B.    mixing colors to make tints and shades; watercolor wash and resist  C.    cutting skillfully with scissors; score, curl, fold  D.    additive sculpture, paper mache  E.    ceramic coiling, pinch pots, clay animals, portrait and figure sculpture, apply glazes  F.     brayer printing, collograph, monoprint, pen and ink  G.    weaving

IV.               Create:  A.    various styles of art using all medias mentioned  B.    artwork centered on the Principles of Design emphasizing still life practices  C.    self-portraits  D.    exploration of color schemes through landscapes  E.    sculptures in the round

V.                 Produce artwork and demonstrate ability of:  A.    drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking, and ceramics  B.    emphasis on the Elements and Principles of Design  C.    drawing what one sees  D.    learning about proportions

VI.               Develop evaluation process by:  A.    complete projects  B.    responsibility of artwork and supplies  C.    following directions
