Hello! My name is Laura Berns. I am thrilled to be joining the Immacolata community! I most recently taught middle school math and science at St. Raphael the Archangel in South City. I was also the coordinator for 7th grade Confirmation, STREAM Club and Service Club. Previously, I taught 7th grade math in the Fort Zumwalt School District. I live on The Hill with my husband, Peter and two children, Andrew (3 years) and Caroline (1 year). I grew up in North County and attended St. Thomas the Apostle and Rosary High School. I received my Bachelors in Education from Maryville University in 2006.
I believe that math is important in honing logical thinking and problem solving skills and that every classroom presents a unique community of learners that varies in abilities and learning styles. My role as a teacher is to give children the tools that will cultivate their own knowledge. To accomplish this goal, I will teach to the needs of each child so that all learners can feel successful. I will present curriculum that involves the interests of the children and makes learning fun and relevant to life. I will incorporate projects, group work, individual work, and hands-on learning experiences in order to make children active learners. Finally, I will tie learning into the community to help children become caring and active members of society.
As a teacher, I feel that every day is a new day and teaching is a lifelong learning process. Every day we learn about new philosophies and new strategies. This learning comes from parents, community, colleagues and especially from children. Children have taught me to open my mind and my heart to the joys and the diversity of world. Because of this, I will never forget how to smile and laugh with the children.
Once again, I am extremely delighted to be joining your community and look forward to working with everyone.
